The 23rd International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE 2027) invites PhD candidates to submit their research to the Doctoral Colloquium.
The Doctoral Colloquium provides doctoral researchers with an opportunity to present ongoing work, discuss methodological and conceptual challenges, and receive constructive feedback from experienced researchers in the Intelligent Environments community.
The colloquium is designed as an interactive research-development forum rather than a conventional paper-presentation session. Its goal is to help doctoral candidates refine their research questions, strengthen their methodological approach, clarify their expected contribution, and connect with researchers working in related areas.
Submissions are welcome across the broad scope of IE 2027, including Artificial Intelligence, Ambient Intelligence, ubiquitous and pervasive computing, the Internet of Things, sensing and actuation, human-computer interaction, data analytics, robotics, smart environments, connected health, intelligent buildings and cities, education, sustainability, cybersecurity, privacy, Responsible AI, and human-centred technologies.
Eligibility
The Doctoral Colloquium is primarily intended for PhD candidates who:
- are formally enrolled in a doctoral programme at the time of submission;
- have defined a research topic, problem, or set of research questions;
- have developed an initial research methodology or research plan;
- have not yet completed or formally defended their doctoral dissertation; and
- are at a stage where feedback from the colloquium can still influence the direction and quality of their research.
Candidates at an early or intermediate stage of their doctoral studies are particularly encouraged to apply. More advanced candidates are also welcome where participation can meaningfully contribute to the further development of their research.
Submission Requirements
Candidates should submit a doctoral research paper of up to 4 pages, following the IEEE conference format. The 4-page limit includes references, appendices, and all other content.
The doctoral candidate must be the first author of the submission. Supervisors and other collaborators may be included as co-authors.
The paper should clearly describe:
- the research context and motivation;
- the research problem and research questions or hypotheses;
- relevant related work and the identified research gap;
- the proposed or applied research methodology;
- work completed to date;
- preliminary findings, where available;
- the expected scientific, methodological, technological, or societal contribution;
- current research challenges or open questions on which feedback is sought; and
- the expected plan for completing the doctoral research.
Candidates are particularly encouraged to clearly identify the aspects of their work on which they would value feedback during the Doctoral Colloquium.
The submission should be accompanied by:
- a short CV of the doctoral candidate, of no more than two pages, including the PhD start date and expected completion date; and
- a brief supervisor endorsement confirming that the candidate is enrolled in a doctoral programme and supporting the submission.
All documents should be submitted in PDF format.
Review and Selection
Submissions will be reviewed by the Doctoral Colloquium Chairs and invited senior researchers.
The evaluation will consider:
- relevance to the scope of IE 2027;
- clarity and significance of the research problem;
- quality and appropriateness of the proposed methodology;
- potential scientific or practical contribution;
- feasibility of the research plan;
- progress appropriate to the candidate’s doctoral stage;
- clarity of the challenges or questions presented for discussion; and
- the potential benefit of participation in the Doctoral Colloquium.
Doctoral Colloquium submissions are not expected to present completed research. The work should, however, be sufficiently developed to support a meaningful and constructive scientific discussion.
Colloquium Format
Accepted candidates will be invited to participate in an interactive Doctoral Colloquium session during IE 2027.
The programme is expected to include:
- short presentations of doctoral research;
- structured feedback from experienced researchers;
- discussion with other doctoral candidates;
- methodological or thematic discussions;
- mentoring opportunities; and
- networking with researchers from the IE 2027 community.
The final presentation format and duration will depend on the number of accepted contributions and will be communicated to accepted candidates.
Publication
Accepted Doctoral Colloquium papers are expected to be published in the IE 2027 conference proceedings, subject to final agreement with IEEE and compliance with the applicable publication requirements.
Publication will be subject to:
- peer review;
- submission of a revised camera-ready version;
- compliance with the prescribed formatting and publication requirements;
- registration of the doctoral candidate; and
- presentation of the work during the Doctoral Colloquium.
Registration and Participation
The doctoral candidate must register for IE 2027 and present the work during the Doctoral Colloquium. The candidate is also expected to actively participate in the colloquium.
IE 2027 will be organised as a hybrid event, with in-person participation preferred and online participation also considered.
Important Dates
- Doctoral Colloquium submission deadline: 1 December 2026
- Communication of results: 22 February 2027
- Camera-ready submission: 30 March 2027
- Conference: 21–24 June 2027
Submission Procedure
Submissions must be made through the IE 2027 submission system under the Doctoral Colloquium track:
Candidates should upload:
- the doctoral research paper;
- the short CV; and
- the supervisor endorsement.

The 23rd International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE 2027) invites submissions to the Videos and Demonstrations Track.
The track provides a forum for presenting innovative Intelligent Environments research through live demonstrations, recorded videos, or a combination of both.
Unlike a conventional demonstration exhibition, this is a peer-reviewed academic track. Authors are required to submit a short paper describing the scientific contribution underlying the demonstrated system, application, or technology.
The track is particularly suitable for research that is best appreciated through direct observation and interaction, including working prototypes, deployed systems, intelligent devices, interactive applications, research platforms, datasets, software tools, robotic systems, multimodal interfaces, digital twins, immersive environments, and other practical implementations related to Intelligent Environments.
